Seventy percent of respondents to a survey conducted by the Augustów city council (2024) want the demolition of the postmodern building on the eastern side of the Sigismund Augustus Market Square. The so-called “Atol,” built in 2003 at a cost of PLN 2.5 million, was designed by Janusz Czerwiński. From its inception, the building, intended to resemble a ship, has been controversial. The reflective glass, aluminum, irregular shape, arches, and broken lines characteristic of the new architecture at the turn of the century, are incompatible – according to residents – with the traditional, primarily pre-war, architecture of the market square. The Atol’s less-than-functional internal layout, which now houses only public restrooms after the Tourist Information Center moved out, doesn’t help matters. The pavilion’s construction technique and materials also proved unsatisfactory: the glass roof leaks and the walls are cracked. According to official estimates, a complete renovation of the Atol would cost the city over PLN 800,000. It would be expensive because the building will most likely be demolished and a completely new facility built in its place. Address: Rynek Zygmunta Augusta 44, Augustów.
