The development of the quarter on Granary Island between Stągiewna, Chmielna, Spichrzowa, and Motławska Streets was constructed between 1994 and 1998. The architectural design, which evokes retroversion—a concept that preserves the atmosphere and layout of the historic buildings but with a postmodern, free-form aesthetic—was created by Stanisław Michel, Kazimierz Jarosz, Stefan Philipp, Józef Chmiel, and Andrzej Sotkowski. As a result, a 100-meter-long building with a courtyard was constructed along Stągiewna and Spichrzowa Streets, featuring the facades of dozens of historic tenement houses with their own entrances and roofs. The designers of the Stągiewna quarter received the Gdańsk Millennium Medal for “restoring the historical beauty of this part of the city,” and their concept set the direction for the reconstruction of subsequent areas of Granary Island, which remains relevant today.
