Golden Tenement Houses, Artus Park, Waterside – these are various names for the controversial tenement complex on Długie Ogrody Street in Gdańsk. Some consider it a monument to early postmodernism, while others consider it a “Gdańsk macabre” that embodies all the flaws of the 1990s style – ugly detail, comic-book colors, and poor proportions. The corner tenement house in the complex was the headquarters of Amber Gold, known for the largest financial scandal in the Third Polish Republic. The design for the entire complex was created by Stanisław Michel, who passed away in 2020 and designed over 100 buildings in Gdańsk, whose work includes modernist, historicist, and postmodernist styles. The complex, built in the 1990s, will most likely be demolished, and a new residential and commercial complex will be built in its place. The Gdańsk local government is working on amending the local zoning plan, which will allow the Belgian developer Alides to construct several new buildings on the site, including one 27 meters high.
