Katowice, Primary School No. 51

The school complex in Giszowiec was built between 1990 and 2002 according to the winning design by Stanisław Niemczyk, Anna Pieńkowska-Kuszewska and Marek Kuszewski. The investment was carried out in stages, the first of which was completed in 1993 with the opening of part of the complex for younger classes. Currently, the school has approximately 1,000 students, who use almost 2,000 square metres of floor space, including gyms, several sports fields, a swimming pool, several patios and a courtyard with arcades and a colonnade covered with ivy. The whole complex resembles a small town (some of the classrooms are separate houses) and is called the ‘school of dreams’. The complex, built in a postmodern style, is described in literature as ‘anti-modernist’, which is explained quite well and simply on the school’s website as architecture that ‘refers to historic buildings, is large, spacious and at the same time cosy, with corners for play and rest’. Address: 7a Przyjazna Street, Katowice.
