Krakow, Gate to the City of the Dead
2026-02-04
The cemetery chapel at Batowice Cemetery on Powstańców Street was built in 1998 according to a design by Romuald Loegler. It is considered the architect’s most ‘metaphysical’ work, symbolising the transition between reality and infinity, a ‘gateway’ to the world of the dead. The architect himself pointed out that his Batowice project was inspired by the postmodern architecture of Finland, which he encountered in the 1970s while staying in that country on a scholarship. Address: Batowice Cemetery, Powstańców Street 48, Krakow.
