The Higher Theological Seminary of the Congregation of the Resurrectionist Fathers in Krakow is one of the most important works of postmodern architecture in Poland. In 2005, the complex was included in the list (and exhibition) of the 20 best buildings in the country, ‘Poland. Icons of Architecture,’ prepared by Architektura Murator. The seminary was designed by Dariusz Kozłowski in collaboration with Maria Misiągiewicz and Wacław Stefański in 1983. It was built between 1985 and 1996.

The complex, which includes the seminary, residential buildings, a refectory, the Emaus Church and two chapels, bears the symbolic name ‘The Way of the Four Gates’. The names of the individual buildings and parts of the complex refer to the symbolism of the Resurrection, transcendence and various cultural references, not only religious ones (Gates of Initiation, Hope, Knowledge and Faith; Courtyards of Desires and Youth, Paths of the Spirit and Four Gates, House of Youth). The architecture of the complex, in accordance with Kozłowski’s ideas, is full of symbolic narratives and meanings, where utility is not the most important thing, but rather ‘creating fiction in a real way’. The towers, gates, portals, buildings and facades are characterised by solutions typical of postmodernism – theatricality, playing with appearances and form, non-obvious functions, diversity of materials and rich colours. Address: 1 Księdza Pawlickiego Street, Krakow.
