The Basilica of Our Lady of Licheń is the main church of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sorrows, Queen of Poland in Licheń Stary – a vast complex that also includes other churches, several chapels, a monastery, a hotel, a cemetery, museums, a hospice, and religious and charitable institutions. The basilica is the largest church in Poland and one of the largest in the world. It was built between 1994 and 2004, designed by Barbara Bielecka, at the initiative of Marian priest Eugeniusz Makulski (1928-2020, the sanctuary’s long-time custodian). The building, built by Budimex, has a cubic capacity of 300,000 m³, an area of ​​23,000 m², a length of 139 m, and a tower with a height of 141.5 m. The square in front of the church can accommodate approximately 250,000 people. The investment cost approximately 200 million złoty from contributions from the faithful.
