One of the tenement houses undergoing renovation as part of the city’s nearly PLN 300 million City Center Revitalization project, launched in 2017. As part of the project, over 20 tenement houses in the city center will undergo renovations, often including facade changes, including 15 on Włókiennicza Street (formerly Kamienna Street). The project envisions “artistic forms” being created on the facades of the renovated buildings, often in a postmodern style, which has been met with widespread criticism from residents and the architectural community in Łódź (“outdated aesthetics,” “kitsch,” “trashy”). Łódź City Hall does not disclose the authors of the individual designs for the new façades.

The 19th-century tenement house at 6 Włókiennicza Street was designed by Hilary Majewski. The official website of the City of Lodz (rewitalizacja.uml.lodz.pl) presents the results of the revitalization: “Due to the sparse decoration of the facade, it was decided that, in addition to a comprehensive modernization, the tenement house would be an excellent material for an artistic installation. As a result, the facade received delicate rustication (imitating the structure and form of stone blocks) on the ground floor walls. The next level of the building received glazing and six caryatids (stylized female figures) supporting the cornice. The windows on the second floor were decorated with delicate frames. The courtyard surface was made of stone paving stones. Benches were added to the courtyard, including two with a pergola, a gazebo, and a small playground for children. The building housed 13 municipal apartments, a care and educational facility, and four commercial premises.”
