A large panel housing estate designed to resemble a small town on a hill – with its own market square, a ‘town hall’ tower with a clock (actually a staircase), arcaded arcades housing shops and service outlets, and arched entrance gates.

Its local name, ‘Smerfy’ (Smurfs), comes from the use of blue trapezoidal sheet metal, the cheapest colour produced by the Florian Steelworks in Świętochłowice. Unique for the twilight years of the Polish People’s Republic, the housing estate was built between 1982 and 1989 for the employees of the Katowice Steelworks Metallurgical Combine. It was built as a priority project imposed by the central and provincial authorities. It was designed by Waldemar Szarapo, a Tolkien enthusiast and architect of the reconstruction of Sosnowiec and the Arka Bożka housing estate in Bytom. Address: Pl. Konstytucji 3 Maja, Słowiki Housing Estate, Olkusz.
