According to critics, Disneyland, Gargamel, and the dummy, whose construction between 2010 and 2013 irreversibly encased the relics of the medieval original in concrete. The project to restore the “castle anew” was created by Witold Milewski, the author of, among other things, the postmodern church in Suchy Las and Poznań’s tallest building, the Collegium Altum. The original Royal Castle, built in the 13th century by Przemysław II, has been expanded, destroyed (1712, 1945), and rebuilt numerous times over the centuries. In the 1950s, some of its remaining fragments, such as remnants of the wall, cellars, and foundations, were secured and preserved. In 2002, the Social Committee for the Reconstruction of the Royal Castle was established, and a decade later, a fortified symbol of the city’s Polish identity was rebuilt, counterbalancing its Prussian architecture (the Imperial Castle from the early 20th century). However, the “restoration of the former seat of rulers and making it a showcase worthy of Poznań” (KOZKwP) met with criticism and opposition. Protests came from, among others, the Institute of Art History at Adam Mickiewicz University, several thousand people on social media, and numerous architects. Currently, the Royal Castle houses the Museum of Applied Arts, and a tourist viewing point has been built on the reconstructed/imagined tower.
